WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., Sept. 25, 2001 — Williams College has begun installation of a new boiler in its heating plant. The project began this summer with the demolition of existing boiler #3, originally installed in 1953. The new boiler will lower sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emission from the plant. Work will continue through summer of 2002.

Twenty to 25 parking spaces in the parking lot adjacent to the hockey rink will be lost during the construction phase. No parking spots will be lost permanently as the result of this project.

In addition to the new boiler a 3,00 kilowatt steam turbine generator is planned for the heating plant. This unit will be able to generate approximately 40 percent of the college’s electrical power needs over the course of a heating season. The project will be completed in December 2002.

The heating plant is located on Heating Plant Drive, off of Water Street in Williamstown.
