WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., June 12, 2001 — Kristina G. Fisher ’02, a political science major at Williams College from Santa Fe, New Mexico, has been named a 2001 Truman Scholar.

Eighty students nationwide are selected for this honor on the basis of leadership potential, intellectual ability, and the likelihood of “making a difference.” Each scholar receives a $30,000 scholarship for graduate education in preparation for a public service career.

Fisher plans to use the scholarship to attend law school, but before enrolling she intends to work on public or environmental policy issues in New Mexico.

She has interned at the New Mexico Environmental Law Center; Think New Mexico, a state issues public policy think tank; and the Santa Fe office of U.S. Representative Tom Udall.

“Fisher has already demonstrated a unique degree of commitment and determination to make a difference in public life,” said Udall. “I see her emerging as someone who will be a creative and tireless advocate for natural resources public policy.”

She is pursuing a major in political science and a concentration in environmental studies at Williams College. She first got interested in environmental issues through watershed monitoring in a high school biology class.
