WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., Oct. 7, 2003 — The Geosciences Class of 1960 Scholars Lecture Series will feature John Garver of Union College, lecturing on “Mountain Uplift and Climate: Studies from the Peruvian Andes.” His talk will take place Thursday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. in room 204, Clark Hall.
Garver’s research interests include the interaction of sedimentation and tectonics. His research involves understanding the long-term evolution of mountain systems which require detailed knowledge of the relationship between uplift, exhumation, erosion, and deposition in adjacent sedimentary basins. Garver’s focus areas are the Southern Alps in New Zealand, the Northern Andes (Peru), and Kamchatka (Russia).
Garver has written for numerous scholarly journals, including the Geological Society of America Bulletin, Geology, Tectonophysics, and the Journal of Sedimentary Research. He is professor of geology and director of environmental studies at Union College, where he teaches classes in tectonics, the stratigraphy and sedimentology of the New York region, carbonate sedimentology, and historical geology, among other subjects.
Garver received his B.A. in 1983 from Middlebury College, and his M.Sc. (1985) and Ph.D. (1989) from the University of Washington.
