WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., June 12, 2001 — Free tutoring in writing will be available this summer to local middle-school students. Enrollment is open to students now finishing sixth, seventh, or eighth grades. Berkshire County students are eligible, along with students from Pownal, Stamford, and Bennington. Enrollment and scheduling can be arranged by contacting Peter.D.Grudin at 597-4264 or at [email protected].

The tutorials will begin on June 20, 2001.

The sessions, which includes a general enrichment program, will be conducted by Williams College students. Tutorials take place on the Williams campus. The program invites writers of all levels of skill and experience.

Although the program focuses on writing, the program will also include some studies of classic films, local museums, and local history, as well as plenty of reading. These activities will fuel the writing that students do.

“This program is a wonderful opportunity for middle-school students. Not only will each receive customized attention, each will be in contact with a good role model, and each will learn from the general resources of the college and the area,” says Grudin, who has directed this program for the last nine years.

Scheduling is flexible. Tutors can meet with students during the day, after work, and on weekends. The program, however, does not provide transportation.

The program is funded by The Robert Hardman Fund for Writing, and largely by contributions from Mrs. Helen Krumpe.
