Senator Chris Murphy to Talk about Politics, Policy, and Partisanship

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., April 26, 2016—Chris Murphy ’96, junior U.S. Senator for Connecticut, will visit Williams College on Monday, May 2. Associate Professor of Political Science and Chair of Leadership Studies Justin Crowe ’03 will lead an interview with Murphy, “Politics, Policy, and Partisanship: A Conversation with U.S. Senator Chris Murphy.” Among the topics to be explored are the daily life of a United States senator, the importance of the media and interest groups in legislative politics, the internal struggles of both the Democratic and Republican Parties in 2016, and the prospects for meaningful governance in the 21st century. The event will take place a 7 p.m. in Griffin Hall, room 3. It is free and open to the public.

Elected in 2012, Murphy serves on the Appropriations Committee, the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, the Foreign Relations Committee, and the Democratic Steering & Outreach Committee. Prior to his election to the U.S. Senate, Murphy served Connecticut’s Fifth Congressional District for three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. During his three terms, Murphy served on the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the Energy and Commerce Committee, and the Committee on Financial Services. Murphy also served for eight years in the Connecticut General Assembly.

Murphy received his B.A. from Williams and his J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law.
