International Photographer Joseph Rodriguez to Speak at Williams College

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., January 4, 2018—Joseph Rodriguez, internationally recognized documentary photographer, will visit Williams College on Monday, Jan. 8, to speak about his lifelong passion for recording the stories of people whose lives are often ignored by mainstream narratives. The event will take place at 7 p.m. in W.L.S. Spencer Studio Art Building, room 112. There will be refreshments and an informal discussion with Rodriguez after the talk.

Rodriguez is a social documentary photographer and a strong advocate for immigrant communities. He has documented Muslim communities in Sweden and published the New Americans, a book recounting the journeys of seven new immigrant families. His photographs have been featured in several publications including The New York Times Magazine, GQ, Newsweek, Esquire and Der Spiegel. For his work, he has been awarded “Pictures of the Year award” by the National Press Photographers Association three times.

Recently, he was featured in The New York Times for his photo essay on the effects of Hurricane Maria called, “Puerto Rico in the Dark.” Rodriguez has published several other books, including Spanish Harlem: El Barrio in the 80s; East Side Stories: Gang Life in East L.A.; Flesh Life: Sex in Mexico City; and Still Here, Stories after Katrina and Juvenile (a story of incarcerated teens). Currently, Rodriguez teaches at New York University.
