Jonathan Fielding and Hernando Garzon Discuss Health Care in 21st Century America

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., September 16, 2015—Dr. Jonathan Fielding ’64 and Dr. Hernando Garzon ’84, both 2015 Bicentennial Medalists, will speak at Williams College on Saturday, Sept. 19, about their respective experiences in the world of health care. The talk will begin at 2 p.m. in Dodd Living Room. The talk is free and open to the public.

Fielding and Garzon, along with three other accomplished alumni, will be awarded a Williams College Bicentennial Medal at Convocation on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 19. They join Michael F. Curtin Jr. ’86, Kristin J. Forbes ’92, and Claudia B. Ranking ’86. All will be presented the medal by President Adam Falk and College Council Co-Presidents Jesús Espinoza ’16 and Marcus Christian ’16.

Johnathan FieldingFielding is a Distinguished Professor at UCLA in the Fielding School of Public Health and the Geffen School of Medicine. He is the founder and co-director of the School of Public Health’s Center for Health Advancement. Fielding has been a founding member of a number of national task forces that assess best evidence and make recommendations to improve public health.

A recipient of the Kellogg award 2014 for his outstanding leadership in public health, Fielding received four graduate degrees after graduating from Williams, including an M.A. in the history of science, an M.D. and masters in public health both from Harvard, and an M.B.A from the Wharton School. Aside from a 16-year tenure as director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, which encompasses 85 Cities and 10 million citizens, he has published over 200 articles, book chapters and editorials.

Hernando Garzon 3Garzon is the director of Kaiser Permanente Global Health Programs, an emergency room physician at Kaiser Permanente Sacramento, and the medical director of Sacramento County’s Emergency Medical Services. With a medical degree from NYU School of Medicine, Garzon has traveled all over the world to treat disaster victims, and was one of the first doctors on the ground in Haiti following the massive and devastating earthquake in January 2010. Throughout his career, he has responded to over 20 disasters both in the U.S. and overseas.
