Historian Jonathan Schneer to Speak at Williams College

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., April 23, 2015—Jonathan Schneer will present “Ministers at War: Winston Churchill and his War Cabinet” at Williams College on Thursday, May 7. This event will take place at 7 p.m. in Griffin Hall, room 3. It is free and open to the public.

In his talk, Schneer will discuss his new book, Ministers at War: Winston Churchill and his War Cabinet. Schneer shows how Churchill navigated the war effort by managing his team of supremely able yet contentious cabinet members. The outcome of the war, Schneer says, lay not only in Churchill’s individual brilliance but also in his skill as an executive, and in the collective ability of men who muted their personal interests to save the world from barbarism.

Schneer holds a B.A. from McGill University and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He is the modern British historian in the Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of History, Technology, and Society. In addition to authoring numerous articles and essays, he has written seven books and co-edited two. Schneer’s The Balfour Declaration: The Origins of the Arab-Israeli Conflict won a National Jewish Book Award in 2010.

Previously, Schneer was the book review editor for the Radical History Review, of which he was a founding member. He also served on the editorial board of Twentieth Century British History. Schneer is the recipient of several fellowships, including from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Whiting Foundation.

This event is co-sponsored by the history department and the program in leadership studies.
