WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., January 13, 2015—From January 12 through March 20, 2015, Williams College will host “Geographies: New England Book Work,” an exhibit by the New England Guild of Book Workers. The exhibit will include new bookbinding and artist books, all of which connect to the New England theme. The exhibit will be located in Sawyer Library, split between the main lobby and the Stephen Schow Gallery on the 4th floor. The main lobby exhibit will be accessible during library hours (library.williams.edu/hours) and the gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The exhibit includes works from 26 entrants, who come from all the New England states. A number of works deal with New England history from a variety of perspectives including an 1874 copy of the Gazetteer of the State of Massachusetts bound by John Nove. Nancy Leavitt’s Plant Corridors, Penelope Hall’s Wildflowers Around Tufts Pond.  While some books are the traditional representation of the codex form, Bexx Caswell’s Mind Map, Grahan Patten’s Call ME Trimbab and Susan Bonthron’s Stones may give viewers ideas of what a book might look like.

Williams is the fourth stop of this travelling exhibition which will visit each of the six New England states.

The Guild of Book Workers, a national organization founded in1906, brings together people interested in all the book arts, including bookbinding, book conservation, calligraphy, decorative paper, papermaking, and printing. It publishes a newsletter and peer-reviewed journal, hosts an Annual Standards of Excellence Seminar, and maintains a library open to all members. The New England chapter consists of about 180 members and organizes a variety of programs within the region.
