WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., October 10, 2014—Williams College will host a conversation between Jonathan Franzen and Andrew Sullivan on issues such as the environment, income inequality and family. The discussion will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. on the MainStage in the ’62 Center for Theatre and Dance. The event is open to the public and tickets are free but required. They are available in person at the box office or by phone at (413) 597-2425, Tuesday through Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m., or online at http://62center.williams.edu/box-office/.

Franzen, National Book Award winner for his novel The Corrections, was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2011. He is a Pulitzer Prize nominee whose most recent novel is titled Freedom. Franzen will be talking to Sullivan, a former senior editor of The Atlantic and the author of several books on conservatism and homosexuality. Previously a blogger for The Daily Beast, Sullivan currently writes his blog, The Dish, on his independent website.

The event is this year’s Class of ’71 Public Affairs Forum. Candis Smith, assistant professor of political science, will moderate the discussion. The Class of ’71 Public Affairs Forum takes place every other year in the form of a debate, an on-stage conversation, or a series of lectures in the fall semester that focus on issues of national or international importance.

The event is organized and sponsored by the Lecture Committee.
